Design Story

The artwork builds a trompe-l'oeil breach at the centre of a round format. Torn, frayed edges curl back in radiating triangles, revealing deep crimson and charcoal beneath a pale, lace-like surface. A cracked porcelain face rises through the gap, eyes fixed forward, framed by tangled auburn hair and a dark ribbon. Two hands reach outward, one splayed almost to the lower edge, and that diagonal is what gives the piece its motion. The circular border acts as containment; the tear acts as rupture. Tension lives entirely in that contradiction. The muted beige field keeps the palette restrained, so the reds and the dark eye sockets carry all the weight.

As a rug, the round silhouette reinforces the illusion: the edge becomes the frame of the opening. The motif is centred and scaled for full-surface impact, read from standing height rather than close inspection. Negative space around the tear lets the composition breathe, making it a single statement floor piece that anchors an entryway or a darker interior scheme.
